A Bread Factory

After 40 years of running the cultural centre they founded in a former bread factory, Dorothea and Greta are forced to fight for survival when a couple of Chinese performance artists settle in Checkford, using flashier methods to capture attention. In the midst of the hustle and bustle brought to the small community, the two cultural animators try to continue the work, rehearsing a production of Euripides’ Hecuba. However, on the day of the premiere they receive the news that The Bread Factory will lose an essential slice of funding. Major decisions have to be made. It is Patrick Wang’s most ambitious film, which brilliantly draws on a variety of formal devices, borrowed from theatre and literature, to reflect on what it means to live in contemporary America.
