Applications are now open for this open call looking for a Visiting Professor at Georgetown University for the academic year 2025/26. This is an initiative of FLAD and the Department of Government of Georgetown University, in Washington, D.C., USA. This open call includes financial support for a stay of one semester or one year.
This is a unique opportunity available to Portuguese Professors at one of the most reputable institutions of higher education in the United States, a worldwide reference in the areas of Political Science and International Relations. The chosen professors will have the opportunity to teach for a year or a semester at Georgetown, benefiting from the University’s resources, developing partnerships and its international curriculum. Candidates may propose a longer stay, of two semesters, if they so wish. The selecting committee will have final say. The course subjects to be proposed can be broader, and only require that they fall within the areas of Political Science and International Relations. FLAD will support those chosen with a $5,500 monthly grant, health insurance and round-trip travel. Applications are open until November 18, 2024. Selection conditions: The competition aims to select up to two visiting professors in the area of Political Science or International Relations to teach at Georgetown University for one or two semesters of the 2025/2026 academic year.
- The selected teacher will teach one subject per semester;
- The final decision on the program of the course(s) to be taught will be the subject of an agreement between FLAD, Georgetown University and the selected candidate;
- The selected candidate must actively participate in the academic life of the Department, develop initiatives in Washington D.C., in partnership with FLAD, and collaborate with FLAD’s work, both at that University and in the relationship with Washington-based institutions, including think tanks, foundations, other universities, and various local contacts.
Eligibility criteria
- Portuguese nationality;
- Doctor’s Degree;
- Work published in his/hers academic area;
- Teaching experience in English.

- In the form, candidates must indicate the preference of the length of their stay (one or two semesters), and the final decision is made to the jury.
Documents:
- Motivation letter in Portuguese or in English;
- CV in Portuguese and in English;
- Proposal of curriculum of a discipline in English;
- Copy of the PhD certificate;
- Two letters of recommendation from professionals from the academic world (research and/or teaching) in Portuguese or English.
Terms and conditions: The application period will run from September 24 to November 18, 2024. Only applications made through the online form (indicated above) will be accepted. Evaluation Applications will be analysed by a jury consisting of:
- Nuno Morais Sarmento, President of FLAD;
- Pedro Magalhães, Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon;
- Lívia Franco, Professor at the Institute of Political Studies of the Catholic University of Portugal.
For a better evaluation of the candidates, interviews will be held with the best classified in the curriculum evaluation. Financial Support FLAD will award a scholarship in the amount of 5,500 USD/month to the selected candidate, plus health insurance and round-trip travel.
