Applications are open for the new edition of the Atlantic Security Award, a program that will support two researchers – with 15 thousand euros each – to develop research projects of excellence in topics related to Security and Defense in the Atlantic. This initiative is a partnership between the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), the Atlantic Center (AC) and Instituto da Defesa Nacional (IDN).
FLAD, together with the Atlantic Center and Instituto da Defesa Nacional, launches another edition of the Atlantic Security Award, with the aim of supporting the research of two researchers in the area of Security and Defense in the Atlantic. The selected projects must be developed over a period of eight months starting in 2025 and must demonstrate the ability to contribute to progress in knowledge on topics related to current challenges in the field of Security and Defense in the Atlantic area.
For this edition we will have the following reference themes:
- Impact of public policies on the security and defense of the Atlantic;
- Correlation between environment, security and development;
- Transnational threats in the Atlantic area;
- Exercise of sovereignty and capacity development in the maritime domain;
- Dynamics of cooperation and competition in security on a global scale;
- Maritime safety, ocean management and ocean infrastructure security.
This list is not exclusive, so projects on topics that are not included in it will be accepted.
Eligibility criteria
- The applicant must have completed his or her’s PhD, or equivalent degree, no more than 10 years ago;
- Maternity or paternity will be taken into account for the calculation of this limit: the number of years after obtaining a doctorate degree is reduced by 18 months for each child born after obtaining the degree;
- Submitted research proposals must fall into the general category of Security and Defence in the Atlantic;
- The candidate must provide evidence of independent research of high scientific quality.
Calendar
The competition is open between January 22, 2025 and April 7, 2025, at 23:59 (Mainland Portugal time, UTC). Candidates will be notified of the decision by May 16, 2025.
Jury
Applications will be evaluated by a jury composed of:
- Ana Santos Pinto, Professor at Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa;
- Luís Miguel Escudeiro da Costa Cabral, Atlantic Centre;
- Maria Francisca Saraiva, Study Advisor at Instituto da Defesa Nacional.
