We are in the last month of applications for the Fulbright grant for research with the support of FLAD. Interested parties can see here how to apply, step by step, as well as the advice transmitted at the information session of January 16th.

What is the process to finalize your application? Get to know here, through the Fulbright Webinar, what steps you need to take.

Intended for master students in Portuguese institutions, who wish to carry out a research project in the USA for over a period of 4 months, the Fulbright grant for research with the support of FLAD featured an information session on the 16th of January, to present the requirements to receive the grant, by Fulbright’s Executive Director, Otítlia Reis, but also to clarify doubts related to the application process by the Administrative and Program Assistant, Sofia Wahon.

Prof. Elsa Henriques, a member of the Executive Council, reiterated the importance of obtaining research and study grants for the academic success of any Portuguese student and/or researcher and advised the search for support either in the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), as in FLAD and in the Fulbright Commission Portugal.

We lacked a solution for those who wished to do a master’s degree abroad, so we wanted to cooperate with Fulbright in order to be able to answer to these types of students. – Said Prof. Elsa Henriques.

The session also was attended by Prof. Deolinda Adão, Executive Director of the Portuguese Studies Program of UC Berkeley, which presented the application specifications and costs for the different academic degrees in UC Berkeley, as well as the different grants available, especially for Portuguese and Portuguese-descendants, as is the case with the Pinto-Fialon Fund.

At the end of the session we had the pleasure of learning from the contribution of two Fulbrighters, Bárbara Matos, of the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon, and Paulo Silva, from the University of Minho, what it is to study, research and live in the USA.

Barbara Matos conducted a period of her master’s research about otter foraging ecology at the University of Alaska Southeast. Paulo Silva joined as Visiting Research at the Berkeley Lab for his Functional Metatranscriptomic Screening For Yeast Expressed D-Xylose Isomerase project.

Both Fulbrighters, now in their Ph.D. programs, were extremely happy and grateful for their academic mobility experience in the US, which despite the difficulties in finding accommodation, high level of work and increased cost of living, still was a unique learning opportunity crucial to their professional and academic careers.
