A few days after voters choose the future President of the United States at the polls, FLAD welcomes Hal Brands, an expert in international relations and strategy, Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute think tank and Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, to help understand what role the United States will play in the world from 2025 with the new presidency – November 11, at 6:30 pm, in the FLAD auditorium in Lisbon.
After a campaign focused mainly on domestic issues – such as immigration, abortion and the future of democratic institutions – the new President of the United States will have a complex set of specifications, as far as foreign policy is concerned. From the war in Ukraine to the conflicts in the Middle East, the threat of Russia and North Korea, competition with China, and the future of traditional alliances, there are many issues that promise headaches for the future tenant of the White House. In the session “America and the World in 2025 and Beyond”, the specialist in international relations and strategy, Hal Brands, will be talking to Márcia Rodrigues, journalist and International editor at RTP, to help us understand the impact on the world of the November 5 elections. In addition to being a Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Hal Brands is a columnist for Bloomberg, and the author of several books, including ‘The Twilight Struggle: What the Cold War Teaches Us about Great-Power Rivalry Today’ (2022), ‘The Lessons of Tragedy: Statecraft and World Order (2019)’ and ‘American Grand Strategy in the Age of Trump (2018)’. He was special assistant for Strategic Planning to Secretary of Defense Ash Carter between 2015 and 2016, at the end of Barack Obama’s administration. This will be the third session of the cycle of conferences dedicated to the U.S. presidential elections that FLAD is developing with U.S. experts, on topics relevant to the domestic and foreign policy of that country and to the Euro-Atlantic community, with the aim of promoting the debate on current American politics and the implications of this election inside and outside the U.S. With these sessions, we want to contribute to a greater knowledge of the American political and electoral system, at a time when in European countries, and certainly in Portugal, so much attention is devoted to the American political reality. This cycle is an opportunity for researchers, students, policy makers, diplomats, media, analysts and the general public to have closer contact with leading international authors and experts in the field. The sessions are moderated by RTP journalist Márcia Rodrigues, current international editor of the channel and former RTP correspondent in Washington D.C., where she covered, among others, the administration of Donald Trump. The session with Hal Brands will take place on November 11, at 6:30 pm, in the FLAD Auditorium in Lisbon. Admission is free, upon confirmation of attendance through this link.
