FLAD supports two Summer Schools that will take place on the islands of Santa Maria and Terceira, in the Azores, in July. The Foundation will fund individual scholarships to PhD students from Mainland Portugal and the United States, which will cover airfares and accommodation throughout the period of the Summer School.
In order to contribute to the permanent updating of knowledge and the development of science in the Azores, as well as contacts and exchanges of experiences between specialists from various scientific institutions and different regions, with a special focus on specialists with links to the United States of America, FLAD supports two intensive summer courses that take place during the month of July on Terceira Island and the Island of Santa Maria.
These two courses will contribute to advance knowledge in areas of interest relevant to the Autonomous Region of the Azores, and are supported by the Regional Government.
AZS – Azores Summer School in Marine Island (Palaeo)Biogeography
The organization of this intensive course is being carried out by the Research Center on Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO) Azores and will take place between 6 and 17 July in the Village of Porto, on the island of Santa Maria, under the theme Marine Island (Palaeo)Biogeography.
For 11 days, participants will have the opportunity to observe in loco20 years of fieldwork on the oldest island of the Azores, with a vast program that includes lectures, symposia, and fieldwork in areas of the extraordinarily geological diversity of the Island and benefit from the experience of the guest experts.

FLAD Support
There will be 15 grants funded by FLAD for biodiversity students from the University of Lisbon and the University of Porto and 6 for students in the United States, which will support:
- Expenses with the hotel on the Island of Santa Maria in a double room;
- Cost of the flight between mainland Portugal (Lisbon or Porto) and Santa Maria Island (students from Mainland Portugal);
- Cost of the flight between Boston, USA, and Santa Maria Island, Azores (US students).

Summer School in Island Biogeography and Macroecology
Organized by the Azores Biodiversity Group – Center for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Change, with the support of the Regional Government of the Azores and FLAD, this Summer School will take place between 18 and 29 July, in Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira Island.
This course lasts for 70 hours, divided into two working weeks, in which participants will be given a comprehensive overview of different topics of biogeography and macroecology of the island, focusing on terrestrial ecosystems. The course will have a strong theoretical framework, using some of the most prestigious scientists in these areas, who will teach innovative methodologies for sampling on the ground and the necessary analytical tools.

FLAD Support:
Portuguese and USA PhD students are eligible for a grant from FLAD. The value of the scholarship will cover the following expenses:
- Flights between Lisbon or Porto and Terceira Island, in economy class (Portuguese students);
- Flights between Boston and Terceira Island in economy class (students from the United States);
- 14 nights in a 3-star hotel or equivalent, in a double room, in Angra do Heroísmo.
