You can now apply for Visiting Professor in the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, Rhode Island. The call, a partnership between FLAD and Brown University, will cover the two semesters of the 2025/2026 academic year, and is intended to select two Portuguese professors (or residents in Portugal), one for each semester.
Those selected will have the opportunity to teach a semester course in English in the areas of History or Social Sciences (e.g. Sociology, Anthropology or Political Sciences), addressing contemporary Portugal, which may be extended to Portuguese-speaking societies and/or have an international comparative dimension. The final decision on the topic will result from discussions between Brown’s Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies and the selected candidate. Two applicants will be selected, one for the fall semester (September to December) 2025 and one for the spring semester (January to May) 2026.
The selected candidates will also be expected to follow and collaborate with the dynamics of FLAD, both at that University and in the relationship with other educational institutions and others in the New England region. Applications are open between August 1st and November 1st, 2024

Application requirements
- Be Portuguese or resident in Portugal;
- PhD completed at the time of application;
- Affiliation to a higher education institution in Portugal and/or integrated member or collaborator of an R&D unit recognized by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia;
- Teaching experience in English at higher education level.

- Letter of motivation;
- CV, with papers published in the area and teaching experience;
- Copy of the PhD certificate;
- Two letters of recommendation from professionals in the academic world (research and/ or
- teaching);
- Proposal of the curriculum of the course (syllabus) that the candidate intends to teach
- Indication of the desired semester;
- Consent under the General Data Protection Regulation.
Letters of recommendation may be submitted in Portuguese or English. All other documents must be submitted in English.
Selection process and dates
The selection jury is composed of:
- António Costa Pinto – University of Lisbon;
- Cristiana Bastos – University of Lisbon;
- Elsa Henriques – FLAD, presides over the jury;
- João Cardoso Rosas – University of Minho;
- Onésimo Teotónio Almeida – Brown University;
- Patrícia Ferreira – Brown University.
If the Selection Board deems it necessary, interviews may be conducted with the most qualified candidates.
The application period for the two semesters will run from August 1 to November 1, 2024.
The results will be communicated by December 15, 2024. Within 90 days of the end of the semester, a report on the work carried out and experience gained must be sent to FLAD. This report should refer to the number of students who attended the course, curricular and extra-curricular dynamics developed, as well as participation in academic events at Brown and/or other institutions in the region.
Financial support
Each chosen candidate will award a scholarship in the amount of 5,000 euros/month. Additional support of €500 will be provided to cover the cost of the insurance policy and €1,000 to subsidize travel-related costs.
