The first Meet the Author of 2023 already has a date. Anthony Marra is the next guest writer and will talk with journalist Isabel Lucas about his works on January 30th at 6:30pm. The session has free admission, with registration to fladport@flad.pt.

Anthony Marra is the next American writer in this month’s ‘Meet the Author’ session. His debut novel, ‘A Constellation of Vital Phenomena’ (2013), and ‘The Czar of Love and Techno (2015), the author’s only book with a Portuguese edition (Teorema), were both bestsellers in The New York Times and widely acclaimed by critics. The latter was considered one of the best books of that year by various media, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Publishers Weekly, and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Choice Award.

In August 2022, Marra published ‘Mercury Pictures Presents’, a novel written during the pandemic and which, unlike previous books with action in the former Soviet Union, is set in 1940s Hollywood during World War II. Humor being a transversal characteristic in his work, the author considered this latest work as his “most comic work so far.”

Marra has been praised for his ability to find and express humor even in the most dramatic scenarios. In a conversation with The New York Times last July, the author confessed that comedy “seems to him the most eloquent expression of absurdity, a natural reaction to darkness.

On January 30, at 6:30 pm, the writer, storyteller, and Stanford professor will be in the FLAD* auditorium for a conversation with Isabel Lucas, journalist for Público, and readers, about his latest book and his work as a fiction writer.

The session is open to the public, subject only to registration through emailfladport@flad.pt.
