The Fulbright scholarship for research with the support of FLAD is back for the 2025/2026 academic year. Learn how to apply down below.
FLAD and Fulbright Portugal are long-standing partners in supporting study and research in the U.S., and also in promoting Portugal as an academic destination for North Americans. This relationship, which allows Portugal to develop and join efforts and strengthen cultural, academic and scientific cooperation between the two countries, is now reinforced with the 6th edition of the Fulbright research scholarship with the support of FLAD. The scholarships are intended for master’s students from Portuguese universities who have foreseen in their training plan, the realization of a research period at a university or research center in the USA, with a maximum duration of 4 months. It includes all areas of study, with a funding of $7,000. Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree completed before applying for the scholarship (average equal to or higher than 14, preferably);
- Good knowledge of English;
- Agreement with the project by the North American institution;
- Proof of agreement with the project by the coordination / direction of the Master’s Degree or the supervisor of the Master’s project, if it already exists.
Eligibility conditions: Only candidates are considered eligible if they:
- Have Portuguese nationality;
- Have not previously received a Fulbright scholarship;
- Have not resided in the USA for a period of 5 years or more in the 6 years prior to the date of the competition;
- Do not have dual nationality, Portuguese and American;
- Do not have a residence permit (green card) in the U.S.;
- Do not have a valid U.S. visa between the time of the scholarship application and the beginning of the period of stay in the U.S.;
- Be a Master’s student at a Portuguese higher education institution.
Support:
- Funding of USD $7,000 (seven thousand dollars);
- Supplementary health and accident insurance during the period of the scholarship (ASPE);
- Issuance of the necessary documents for the J-1 visa;
- Exemption from visa payment;
- Pre-departure orientation to the U.S.;
- Follow-up of the scholarship holder during the stay in the USA by the Fulbright Commission and the Institute of International Education;
- Opportunities to participate in seminars and other cultural and scientific activities organized by the Fulbright Program, during the fellow’s stay in the U.S., subject to availability of funds;
- Integration into the global network of Fulbright grantees.
Applications: The application period will be open from 1 November 2024 to 31 January 2025. Applications are submitted online through the Fulbright portal.
