Applications for Visiting Professor in the Department of Brazilian Portuguese Studies at Brown University (in Providence, Rhode Island) are open. The competition, which results from a partnership between FLAD and Brown University, is open for the two semesters of the 2022/2023 academic year and is intended to select two teachers, one for each semester.
Brown University is one of the most important and seventh oldest American University, integrating the restricted Ivy League group. Located in Providence, on the East Coast, where there is an expressive Portuguese-American community, this university maintains a reputed Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies. In 1993, FLAD established with the University of Brown a protocol through which a Visiting Professor Program was created, dedicated to the Culture and History of Portugal and the Social Sciences related to contemporary Portugal.
Since then, Brown has relied on the presence of renowned Portuguese scholars, who enrich the curricular offer of the Portuguese core of that department. By continuing this program, which FLAD is very proud of, we are contributing to the promotion of Portugal, its Culture and its academics in the United States.
Main Objective
Teaching in English a semiannual course (curricular unit) of History or Social Sciences (e.g. Sociology, Anthropology or Political Sciences), addressing contemporary Portugal, and may be the theme extended to Societies of Portuguese expression and/or have an international comparative dimension. The final decision of the theme will result from talks between Brown’s Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies and the selected candidate.
The selected candidates must also monitor and collaborate with flad’s work both at that University and in their relationship with other educational institutions and others in the New England region.
Periods
A Visiting Professor will be selected for each of the following academic semesters:
- Autumn Semester (September-December) 2022;
- Spring Semester (January-May) 2023;
Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have a PhD, or CV considered equivalent;
- Have published research within his/hers academic field;
- Possess teaching experience in English;
- Be affiliated with a higher education institution in Portugal and/or become an integrated member of an R&D unit recognized by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

- Motivation letter;
- CV, with papers published in the area and teaching experience;
- Copy of the PhD certificate;
- Two letters of recommendation from professionals within the academic field (research and/or teaching);
- Proposal of the curriculum of the course (syllabus) that the candidate intends to teach
- Indication of the desired semester;
- Consent under the General Data Protection Regulation.
Note: Letters of recommendation may be submitted in Portuguese or English. All other documents must be submitted in English.
The deadline for submitting applications for both semesters is November 6, 2021.
Evaluation and Grant
The candidate will be selected by a jury constituted by:
- Onesimo Teotónio Almeida, professor, researcher and Azorean author of brown University,known in the USA and internationally for his work within Portuguese History and Culture;
- Cristiana Bastos, anthropologist, and researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), coordinator of the research group Identities, Cultures and Vulnerabilities.
- António Costa Pinto, coordinating researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of ULisboa and guest professor at ISCTE-IUL;
- Elsa Henriques, flad administrator;
The evaluation will be based on the documents submitted, and may potentially involve
an interview. The selected candidate must be approved by FLAD.
To the chosen candidate, FLAD will award a scholarship of USD 5,000/month, health insurance (up to a limit of 500 euros), and round trip (up to a limit of 1,000 euros).
